In desperation, François asks for funding for his father’s cousin, Lucien Moblanc, or “Lulu”, a wealthy slacker whom Schudler considers a disgrace to the family. A family rivalry forces Lucien to give François a false promise and then, at the last moment, give up in the hope of undermining the power of the Schudlers and Noel. Frustrated and out of faith, François commits suicide, leaving behind a 3-year-old child, Jean-Noel. Shocked by the death of his son, Schudler suddenly finds contact with reality and realizes the vanity of his existence.
