Filmed in Arizona in 1968, Lonesome Cowboys was a tongue-in-cheek version of the traditional Hollywood western and the last film that Warhol directed himself. The film infamously triggered an FBI investigation into possible interstate transportation of obscene material. Starting in 1963, film became a fixture of Warhol’s prolific practice resulting in his production of hundreds of movies, and establishing him as one of the most influential, avant-garde filmmakers of his generation.
