This post-apocalyptic vision, both nightmarish and hopeful, is a classic John Pitre work. Like Leonardo, Pitre is also an inventor, holding patents on a proprietary artist’s paint line and a range of exercise equipment. He is an accomplished pilot of helicopters and seaplanes and is knowledgeable about all things having to do with navigation and the sea. Born in 1942, Pitre began focusing on these ecologically- based themes in the mid-1960s. These wooden pieces seem to date from the early 1970s. The piece is in EUC with no warping, cracks, crazing or fading. It will need hanging hardware (easily available at any hardware store). The only possible issue I note is a tiny shadow or shallow dent in the upper right corner (as shown). This is a very distinctive work. It will command any space in which it hangs. His credits in this field include the Questar line of fitness equipment and the ROM (Range of Motion) machine, which was awarded the “Best of What’s New” designation in 1993 by Popular Science Magazine and the Time Works device that led to one of TV’s most successful infomercials.
