The museum was opened on July 2, 1972 on the occasion of the 20th year of the Loutkarska Chrudim festival. The private collection of Prof. Became the backbone of the museum collections. Jan Malik, from the position of general secretary of the international puppetry organization UNIMA, also arranged for individual national centers of this organization to donate puppets and puppetry artefacts to the newly established museum. Throughout its existence, the museum’s collection expanded considerably. The museum focuses on collecting and processing documents about the development of Czech and world puppetry. It currently manages more than 50,000 collection items, including more than 8,500 puppets. In addition to puppets, the museum’s collection also includes stage designs, maquettes, backdrops, programs, photographs, sound recordings, printed materials, manuscripts, visual works with a puppet theme, posters and other archives. However, only a fraction is exposed. The museum also houses a library with about 18,000 volumes and a research center. Almost 40,000 visitors visit the museum annually (Wiki).
