This is a Vintage Original 1984. 1st Italian Re-Release Movie Poster – directed by Fritz Lang – It is not a reprint or reproduction. Color lithograph measures 39″ x 55″. Poster is in excellent condition! Colors are as bright and crisp as the day it was printed. No tears, pinholes, or tape. It would be difficult to find another in this good of condition. Folded as originally issued. Prima Edizione Italiana 1984”Selegrafica 80-Roma Via Aretusa 50′ Printed in Italy. This is a large colorful poster with an iconic image of this Silent Film Classic! Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang. Written by Thea von Harbou in collaboration with Lang, [5][6] it stars Gustav Fröhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge and Brigitte Helm. Erich Pommer produced it in the Babelsberg Studios for Universum Film A. The silent film is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction movie, being among the first feature-length movies of that genre. Filming took place over 17 months in 192526 at a cost of more than five million Reichsmarks. Made in Germany during the Weimar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. The film’s message is encompassed in the final inter-title: “The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart”. Metropolis met a mixed reception upon release. Critics found it pictorially beautiful and visually powerfulthe film’s art direction by Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut and Karl Vollbrecht draws influence from Bauhaus, Cubist and Futurist design, [9] along with touches of the Gothic in the scenes in the catacombs, the cathedral and Rotwang’s houseand lauded its complex special effects, but accused its story of naiveté. Wells described the film as “silly”, and The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction calls the film’s story “trite” and its politics “ludicrously simplistic”. The film’s alleged Communist message was also criticized. The film’s extensive running time also came in for criticism, and Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere, with a large portion of Lang’s original footage removed. Many attempts have been made since the 1970s to restore the film. In 1984 Italian music producer Giorgio Moroder released a truncated version with a soundtrack by rock artists including Freddie Mercury, Loverboy and Adam Ant. In 2001 a new reconstruction of Metropolis was shown at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2008 a damaged print of Lang’s original cut of the film was found in a museum in Argentina. After a long restoration process that required additional materials provided by a print from New Zealand, the film was 95% restored and shown on large screens in Berlin and Frankfurt simultaneously on 12 February 2010. In 2001 the film was inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, the first film thus distinguished. Condition: Mint, unused, never framed nor hung. This Metropolis 3-sheet is a fine art, hand pulled lithograph of the original movie poster used to advertise the 1927 release of. The iconic poster features an image of False Maria. This lithograph of the original 3-sheet was re-created as a fine art lithograph, in 1997, on a rare antique 19th century hand-pulled printing press in affiliation with the American Film Institute’s “100 American Classic Movie Posters”. This is the same printing press that was used to create the vintage posters over 100 years ago. There are only 5 of these antique presses in existence, today. Hand drawn plates are made, one for each colour, and then the plates are hand pulled through the vintage press one colour at a time. This is the exact same method that was used to create the beautiful vintage movie posters of the past. The result is vibrant rich colours and crisp clean lines. This is a true work of art. Medium: Hand pulled colour lithograph – hand drawn plates are hand pulled, one colour at a time, in perfect registration on Coventry 100% cotton archival paper with the finest quality archival ink using a rare, hand-pulled antique German Dufa lithography printing press.
