I’m offering this rare and whimsical, VINTAGE”Film Map” poster designed by the UK-based firm Dorothy, featuring a fictional street map composed of over 900 movie titles. Design Concept: The poster arranges cinema classics like Lost Highway and Jurassic Park into a layout reminiscent of a vintage Los Angeles street map. Content: It includes an A-Z key listing all titles featured on the map. ORIGINAL ROLLED SINGLE SIDED 24″H x31.5″ W MOVIE. Excellent CONDITION AND UNUSED. MURDER, MY SWEET (1944). Vintage original 22 x 28 55 x 71 cm. Half sheet poster, USA. Dick Powell, Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley, dir: Edward Dmytryk; RKO. Adapted from Raymond Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely , and the very earliest Chandler adaptation to actually feature the archetypal character of private eye Phillip Marlowe — and one of the acknowledged masterpieces of film noir. Unfolded, there is a 12 30 cm. Tear which extends up from middle lower margin up above the name “MANDER” in actor credits, mended on verso with brown paper, and there are some scattered creases and minor scuffs. Vintage original 41 x 81 103 x 203 cm. Three sheet poster, USA. Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, Robert Duvall, dir: Peter Yates; Warner Brothers. The classic 1960s action-crime thriller, with an iconic performance by Steve McQueen playing the San Francisco cop who becomes obsessed with finding the underground leader responsible for the deaths of witnesses in his protection. Here is one of the finest and most rare posters for this classic title. This example does not appear to have ever been used. Prior to expert linen backing, it showed only very minor shelf wear and shows just minor shelf wear, such as three minor fold juncture separations, a bit of creasing at the very edges and a few minor spots of soiling in the white background. What makes this poster particularly desirable is the fact that the colors match correctly although this poster does not turn up much — when it occasionally does, very often the bottom section has colors which are misaligned with the rest, and that most often requires restoration with paint. This copy is unrestored, with great, nicely matched colors, and all the very minor original issues have been attended to in conservation. The poster is now just about as clean and bright an example as possible, FINE. It must come back in the same condition as it was sent. AUTHENTICATION: My name is Walter Reuben. The legendary diva Maria Callas only did one film, in which she played the role of Medea (in Pasolini’s interpretation of the character in Euripides’ tragedy). Interestingly, Callas had portrayed Medea much earlier in her career, since she performed the Cherubini opera Medea at La Scala in 1953, under the baton of a young Leonard Bernstein. This is one of the best poster images of her in this movie. On linen, with minor touch-ups to address small tears and scuffs, FINE. It must come back in the same condition as it was sent. Vintage original 27 x 41 68 x 102 cm. One sheet poster, USA. Dennis O’Keefe, Claire Trevor, Marsha Hunt, John Ireland, Raymond Burr; dir: Anthony Mann; Eagle Lion. A shadow-ridden film noir with characters choking on their psychoses. It is the story of Joe, a man in prison who has taken the rap for Rick. Rick arranges a break for Joe, knowing that Joe will be caught and go down for the crime once and for all. But with help from the two women that love him, Joe actually escapes and is out to get the man who framed him. Violent and atmospheric, one of the best of the genre. This is one of the really important low budget examples of film noir directed in the’40s by Anthony Mann. On linen, there are repairs to two tears inside the poster, foldline conservation, and two chunks of missing paper replaced in right margin, going about 1 2.5 cm. TARZAN AND HIS MATE (1934). Vintage original 8 x 14 20 x 36 cm. Mini/midget window card, USA, Johnny Weissmuller, Maureen O’Sullivan, Neil Hamilton, Paul Cavanagh, dir: Cedric Gibbons, Jack Conway; MGM. The best and the most loved of the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan series, which ran from 1932 through 1942 at MGM with the lovely Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane, and then continued at RKO between 1943 and 1948. This is the sexiest of the titles as well, with O’Sullivan in her two piece jungle wear and Weissmuller in his abbreviated loin cloth. It contained the still controversial nude swim scene. The scene, which could be shown during the initial April 1934 release, was filmed in several versions (clothed, partially nude and fully nude) and was fully cut from the film later that year. It was not until the late-1990s that it was found and restored. Olympic champ Josephine McKim did the actual nude swim for O’Sullivan, but the openly flirtatious, sexual, yet innocent relationship enacted between O’Sullivan and Weismuller remains extremely appealing today and makes the film, with all its wonderful adventure as well, highly watchable and highly collectible.
