Vintage 3 sheet poster for CHANSON D’AVRIL (SPRING PARADE), Universal Studio, 1940, starring Deanna Durbin, France. Poster measures 37×62 and is in very good condition. There is a 2 inch vertical tear at the top right side (see second image) and a 12 inch horizontal tear at the center of the poster (see third image). Both could be repaired with tape from reverse. The poster has been neatly folded so it could fit into an 11×14 envelope. A few other small tears, but overall very good with colors still vibrant. Poster shows a color rendition of Deanna Durbin in costume for the film, and then a few black and white scenes from the film, showing her with: S. “Cuddles” Sakall, Robert Cummings, Mischa Auer, and “Butch And Buddy”. Director Henry Koster is credited on the poster, which also has the Universal logo.

The second prize of the International Olympic Poster Competition in 1980 gave impetus to the work in the poster genre. Several years of fruitful work in the circus poster followed, and during this period the individual style and technique of Alexander Chantsev gradually developed. In 1989 he was admitted to the Union of Artists. The film posters brought the artist international fame. Solo exhibitions of film posters by Alexander Chantsev took place in Rome in 1991 (together with Yuri Boxer) as part of the exhibition of Soviet film posters, which was held in the largest exhibition hall of the city – Palazzo delle Esposizioni. In 2001, an exhibition of movie posters by Chantsev, Boxer and Maistrovsky was held in the city of Tavira (Portugal). The vintage one-sheet was originally created in 1933 to advertise the release of Footlight Parade, starring James Cagney. This lithograph was re-created, in 2001, on a rare antique 19th century hand-pulled printing press in affiliation with the American Film Institute’s “100 American Classic Movie Posters”. This is the same printing press that was used to create the vintage posters over 100 years ago. There are only 5 of these antique presses in existence, today. Hand drawn plates are made, one for each colour, and then the plates are hand pulled through the vintage press one colour at a time. This is the exact same method that was used to create the beautiful vintage movie posters of the past. The result is vibrant rich colours and crisp clean lines. This is a true work of art.
